THE SAUDI GELOGICAL SURVEY ANNOUNCES A FIELD EXCURSION TO HARRAT KHAYBAR, NORTH-WEST SAUDI ARABIA, Cost SR 1,000 per person

A one day field excursion will be made to Harrat Khaybar on Thursday 8th February 2018. There will be 40 places available on the excursion which will cost SR 1,000 per person, assigned on a first come first served basis. The trip will be made by coach and all food and overnight accommodation in Al Madinah is provided. The party will depart Jeddah at Wednesday 7th at 16:00 pm and stay overnight at Al Madinah. On Thursday 8th February 2018, the participants will be collected in coaches and driven the 240 km north up onto Harrat Khaybar. Two helicopters will be used to fly the participants around the spectacular volcanic scenery. Harrat Khaybar is an unspoiled wilderness that has been protected by its inaccessibility. Around 2012 a new asphalt road was built up on to the top of the harrat where the most spectacular volcanic landforms exist. At a distance of 130 km from Madinah the trip will be broken to visit an early Islamic dam that was broken in the great 1068 tectonic earthquake. Jabal Abyad, the highest point rises to 2093 m above sea level. Warm clothing is recommended. The coaches will park on the harrat and flights will be made around the main central area of volcanoes. Lunch will be provided while awaiting flights.
